Lake Toya is a volcano caldera lake and is part of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. An eruption about 110,000 years ago formed the take. Nakajima island which is at the lake's centre, is formed from the lava dome about 50,000 years ago.
In addition to the lake itself, the Toyako region features hot springs and an active volcano, Mount Usu, which last erupted in the year 2000. This relaxing onsen town was a perfect first stop because we were tired from our travels.
