Asahikawa (旭川) is located in the center of Hokkaido and is the island's second largest city after Sapporo. The city is not known as a leading tourist destination, but its zoo, Asahiyama Zoo, is among Japan's best, which is our main purpose of visiting. We boarded the train from Sapporo and noticed the view from the train slowly transition from buildings to greeneries and it was such a scenic ride.

After our visit to the zoo, we drove our rental car towards Biei. This town is famous for its views of wide fields and hills, and is used as a backdrop for many Japanese commercials and TV programmes.

Along the way we stopped by Shirogane Blue Pond which is a famous because it became Apple Macintosh desktop wallpaper used all around the world. It wasn't that blue in real life but the view heading towards the pond is also something worth appreciating.
Checked in to our homestay in time to witness the sunset at the fields. It was short but beautiful.
